Join my presentation on: Becoming a Good Software Tester in the Age of AI, DevOps, and beyond

The role of the software tester is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Automation, AI-driven tools, and DevOps practices are changing not only how we test software, but also what we expect from the people responsible for quality.
As a trainer, Head of the Sogeti Academy, and member of the German Testing Board, I have been deeply involved in the education of software testers for many years.

What will Jürgen Beniermann be discussing?

Becoming a Good Software Tester in the Age of AI, DevOps, and beyond

The role of the software tester is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Automation, AI-driven tools, and DevOps practices are changing not only how we test software, but also what we expect from the people responsible for quality.
As a trainer, Head of the Sogeti Academy, and member of the German Testing Board, I have been deeply involved in the education of software testers for many years. Today, I increasingly ask myself: does it still make sense to teach traditional testing techniques and foundations when AI agents can generate, execute, and even maintain tests faster than humans? Or do these fundamentals become even more important in an AI-augmented world?

This talk explores how the tester’s role is evolving and which competencies are essential to remain relevant in modern projects. We will look at how responsibilities shift from manual execution to analysis, critical thinking, and quality leadership, and which technical, methodological, and social skills testers need to effectively contribute to quality assurance in AI- and DevOps-driven environments.
Rather than offering final answers, this session shares practical reflections and guiding principles for shaping the future education of software testers—and for staying effective in a rapidly changing testing landscape.
