Filling the Test Automation Gaps with AI – Lessons from the ISTQB Glossary Project

Dynamic testing comprises test analysis, test design, test implementation and test execution. Traditional test automation tools only automate test execution. Model-based testing (MBT) can automate test design but is rarely used due to shortcomings in test implementation. However, the need for a higher degree of test automation continues to grow due to increasingly complex software systems, more frequent integration and deployment (CI/CD) and the spread of DevOps. The question arises today whether a suitable combination of generative AI with existing tools can automate dynamic testing completely, from the test basis to the test result.

The author reports on such a real-life case study. The test object was the ISTQB Glossary App, a web-based dialogue application. The main test objective was to maintain the image of the ISTQB through the quality of its Glossary App. This resulted in a high need for confidence in functional suitability.

The requirements were documented in natural language text. From this, the AI-based analysis component, trained accordingly in the selected test techniques, generated test models. The models had to use domain-level keywords and model elements that are easy for testers to understand. Moreover, they had to address the main product risks. From these models, the MBT tool had to generate high-level test cases that can be reviewed by the testers.

Once the test object was available in the test environment, the generative AI had to implement the tests by selecting test data and mapping the keywords to the test interface. Finally, it could let the test automation tool execute the test cases.

The author shares his lessons learned from this case study:
  • GenAI, MBT, and test automation can be successfully combined to make testing faster, cheaper, and more effective.
  • Techniques and tool chains must be professionally selected and coordinated.
  • Testers no longer need to write test cases, but they must be able to prompt them.
