Keyword-Driven Testing with Robot Framework and Playwright

In the rapidly evolving landscape of web development, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of web applications through automated testing is of paramount importance. This session dives into the realm of open source automation tools that are revolutionizing the way developers and QA engineers approach web automation.

We’ll begin with an exploration of the fundamental principles of keyword-driven testing; a methodology that emphasizes the use of descriptive and human-readable keywords to define test cases. This approach not only simplifies test automation for people with limited programming skills, but also improves collaboration between multidisciplinary teams by making test cases more understandable and modular.

Our discussion will focus on Robot Framework and Playwright, two powerful open source tools known for their flexibility, robustness and extensive technology support. We will take a brief look at Playwright’s core features and highlight its browser automation capabilities that set it apart from its competitors, including its clean and better integration with browser APIs, shadow DOM support, and its debugging capabilities.

Similarly, a detailed look at Robot Framework will highlight its versatility in integrating with other tools and technologies, the ease of creating test cases, and its extensible architecture that has enabled the development of a gigantic ecosystem of extensions.

Using practical examples and real-world scenarios, you will learn how to leverage the synergy between Robot Framework and Playwright by using a pre-built Playwright base keyword library Robot Framework Browser. All tools shown in the talk are fully open source. No strings attached!
